Introducing SearchGPT: A New AI Search Experience
OpenAI has announced the testing phase of SearchGPT, a new prototype that combines advanced AI with real-time web information to provide fast and accurate answers, complete with clear and relevant sources. This temporary prototype is being launched to a select group of users and publishers to gather valuable feedback. Although this is a preliminary version, the most effective features will eventually be integrated into ChatGPT. If you're interested in trying out the prototype, you can sign up to join the waitlist.
A New Way to Search
Searching for information on the web can often be time-consuming, requiring multiple attempts to find the right answers. With SearchGPT, OpenAI aims to streamline this process by enhancing conversational AI capabilities with up-to-date information from the web, making it easier and faster to find what you're looking for.
Designed to Provide Accurate Answers
SearchGPT is designed to quickly respond to your questions with current web information, accompanied by clear links to relevant sources. It allows for follow-up questions, building a contextual understanding similar to a conversation with a person.
Partnering with Publishers and Creators
OpenAI is committed to supporting a vibrant ecosystem of publishers and creators. The goal is to help users discover publisher sites and experiences, offering more choices in search. For decades, search has been a cornerstone for publishers and creators to reach their audiences. With SearchGPT, OpenAI aims to enhance this experience by showcasing high-quality content in a conversational interface, providing multiple ways for users to engage.
"AI search is poised to become a pivotal tool for navigating the internet. It is essential that this technology respects and protects journalism and publishers. We are excited to collaborate with OpenAI in creating new ways for readers to discover content from The Atlantic."
— Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic
SearchGPT emphasizes connecting users with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in searches. Responses include clear, in-line, named attribution and links, allowing users to quickly engage with more detailed results via a sidebar with source links.
OpenAI has partnered with publishers to develop this experience and continues to seek their feedback. Alongside the launch of the SearchGPT prototype, OpenAI is also introducing a system for publishers to manage how their content appears in SearchGPT. It's important to note that SearchGPT focuses on search and is separate from the training of OpenAI's generative AI foundation models. Websites can appear in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training. For more information on publisher controls and OpenAI’s bots, see here.
OpenAI has received feedback from publishers and creators who want to understand how to best engage with AI search products and how their content performs. The prototype will be used to learn and share insights. If you'd like to provide feedback, please email publishers-feedback@openai.com.
"Sam and the talented team at OpenAI understand that for AI-powered search to be effective, it must be built on high-quality, reliable information from trusted sources. For the ecosystem to thrive, the relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic, and the integrity of information must be protected."
